Hidden God

I have often been asked why I think the Father works in such a hidden way (or “sneaky Dad,” as a friend calls Him). I believe one big reason has to do with His loving choice never to ever violate the free will of His children. And if you are the most powerful Being in and outside of creation, that can be a delicate dance.

In earthly relationships, authority (whether it is harsh or benevolent) can work in harmful and controlling ways. That kind of authority is not the Father’s way. It seems the Father’s primary goal is that we feel at one with Him (see John 17:21)—a comfortable, functional unity. When we recognize this goal, we can see the perfect wisdom of the Father’s approach. The feeling of His love and closeness is not overshadowed by His immense power and authority. And when we do experience His work and suddenly realize this perfect combination of love and authority is from Him, we grin and feel deep love and a desire to live all the more with and for Him—like our earthly dad leaving a check and a love note that we find when we unpack our suitcases for our freshman year of college.
